Wednesday morning headlines

SOCCER Ireland winger James McClean scored and David Meyler started as Sunderland secured their spot in the 4th round of the Capital One Cup last night, the Black Cats beat MK Dons 2-0. Seamus Coleman started for Everton who lost 2-1 to Leeds at Elland Road while Shay Given was between the sticks and Ciaran Clark was in defence as Aston Villa overcame Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad. Mario Balotelli opened the scoring for City before a Gareth Barry own goal against his former side levelled matters in the second half, Alexander Kolorov restored the lead before Gabby Agbonlahor brought the game into extra time with his strike. Agbonlahor and Charles N'Zogbia found the net in either half of extra time to give Villa a 4-2 win. Chelsea hammered Wolves 6-0 with Victor Moses and Fernando Torres amongst the scorers while West Ham beat Wigan 4-1 and Swansea beat Crawley Town 3-2. Tonight Arsenal host Coventry, Spurs travel to Carlisle, Manchester United meet Newcastle, Norwich play Doncaster, QPR meet Reading and West Brom play Liverpool. In Scotland Gary Hooper scored 4 goals as Celtic beat Raith Rovers 4-1 in the league cup while in the Airtricity league Premier division St Pats beat Shamrock Rovers 2-1 to cut the gap on Sligo to just 6 points. Edenderry Town and Willow Park have both been handed byes into round two of the Leinster Senior Cup The competition kicks off next month GAA Eamon O'Shea has been ratified as the new Tipperary hurling manager. O'Shea, a Professor at N.U.I Galway, had been part of Liam Sheedy's backroom team when they won the All Ireland in 2010.
